Founded in 1960 as an original AFL team, the Denver Broncos joined the NFL in 1970. They struggled early, with no winning seasons until 1973 and their first playoffs in 1977 (led by the "Orange Crush" defense). The John Elway Era from 1983–1998 was their most successful; Elway transformed the franchise into contenders. They reached Super Bowls in 1986, 1987, and 1989 (all losses) but won back-to-back titles under coach Mike Shanahan.
