The maple leaf is still waving proudly on top of the hockey world. With the legendary rivalry between Canada and the USA fanned by the flames of tense international relations, this tournament seemed to have taken on significance beyond pride of sport, with fans of both nations deeply invested.

After a Team USA 3-1 victory over Team Canada in the round-robin stages just days earlier, American players did what they always do and celebrated winning the meaningless game as if it were the winner-take-all match.

But when it mattered most, it was Team Canada who prevailed in spite of needing an extra Overtime period to do so. Jordan Binnington stood on his head and made several all-world saves at point-blank range on Team USA superstars Brady Tkachuk and captain Auston Matthews to keep Canada in the game.

Connor McDavid scored 8:18 into overtime, and Canada won its fourth consecutive best-on-best international tournament, defeating the United States 3-2 in the championship game of the 4 Nations Face-Off at TD Garden on Thursday, February 20, 2025.

Canada won the gold medal at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, the 2014 Sochi Olympics and the World Cup of Hockey 2016. It also did so at the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics and the 2004 World Cup of Hockey, giving it gold in six of the past seven best-on-best international tournaments.

Nathan MacKinnon was named the tournament's most valuable player after leading all players with four goals, including the one that gave Canada a 1-0 lead 4:48 into the first period. He scored from the point with a wrist shot through traffic.

Team Canada boasted a stacked roster of unbelievable talent and skill. Canadians nationwide look forward to seeing this team back together in the 2026 Olympic Games.
